Madrid reports only about 45 survivors from the Spanish steamer Santa Isabel which went ashore near Villagarcia after a dinner hour wreck. Telephones indicate grim odds of rescue, with most victims believed to have perished within minutes as boats arrived too late.
Deer Lodge January 3 report states Jack Cook, present with Joseph Knopf when he died December 31, did not suicide but was murdered. Physicians and Coroner R W Ross describe deep throat wounds and indicate Cook’s killer aimed to avoid detection. Inquest details mention searches for motive and the involvement of other named individuals.
Formal ceremony marked the transfer of the sheriff's duties from John K O Rourke to Sheriff Duggan in Silver Bow County. O Rourke and Under Sheriff Whalen along with Chief Deputy O Connor turned in badges and keys at Yelock office. Duggan pledged to continue the predecessor's policy and keep officers on hand.
Miss Jeanette Tiankin of Missoula Montana, the only former congresswoman, said in Omaha Nebraska on January 3 that she intends to run for the national house of representatives again soon. She believes redistricting kept her from winning reelection.
Washington Jan 3 The veto of the farmers relief bill reviving the war finance corporation was followed almost immediately by a 63 to 5 Senate vote to make the measure law despite the executive disapproval A veto message quoted the president saying he withheld approval to avoid war credit influence and further government subsidies for private enterprise.
In Helena a grand inaugural reception drew thousands from across Montana. Officials and citizens lined the rotunda from 8 PM to midnight to honor Gore and Mrs. Joseph Al Dixon. Ushers in uniform aided guests as music and dancing filled the Capitol floors.
President Wilson directed Maj. Gen. Enoch H. Crowder to sail for Havana to confer with Cuban President Menocal on remedies for Cuba’s moratorium and financial crisis. The White House said Cuba’s unsettled pre election situation worsens prospects for prosperity and U.S. relations.
New York dispatch reports Eamonn De Valera, president of the Irish republic, sailed back to Ireland despite Dail Eireann urging him to remain in America to press the republic's case for the new administration. Harry Boland, De Valera's secretary, said events moved quickly and he returned on his own initiative.
By a unanimous vote the Anaconda city council approved allowing Sunday afternoon skating at the Commons free rink. Alderman Kelly led the motion stating there is no place in the city for children on Sundays to enjoy outdoor sport. If rink funds and upkeep permit, skating would start around 2 pm to 6 pm, organized by the playgrounds committee.
Rotary leaders in Butte urge action on Hoover’s appeal to aid 3.5 million starving European children. Prof C H Clapp heads the relief effort with about half of $25 million needed raised. recent contributions include a $250 check from Symons Dry Goods, the largest single donation to date.
Cardinal Gibbons slept in his own room for the first time since December 12 as he recovered from fatigue. He was driven by car from the Robert T. Shriver home in Union Mills to his Baltimore residence, and family members report his sleep as peaceful and childlike.

In Nagpur on January 3 the Indian National Congress adopted resolutions urging sympathy for Ireland. A boycott of the planned Duke of Connaught visit was endorsed and tribute was paid to the memory of Lord Mayor MacSwiney of Cork.
Helena dispatch reports the inauguration of Joseph M. Dixon as Montana governor at 11 am in the governor's reception room with Governor Stewart present. Chief Justice Brantly administered the oath, followed by a half hour reception, as the supreme court justices and Attorney General Wellington Rankin took their oaths earlier in the statehouse. Justice Reynolds of Billings, Justice Galen of Helena, and Justice Holloway of Bozeman were named to the Supreme Court, with Ford as retiring attorney general. Stockwell, 63, dies in Kansas City. veteran craps shooter reported dead.
The West Virginia capitol building burned today forcing evacuation of sections housing the governor's office and state departments. One laborer killed, a firefighter seriously injured, several others hurt as roof sections collapsed and a storage explosion occurred. Damaged records and priceless documents were lost with no immediate insurance-based replacement estimate.
