The first New Year’s reception for President Roosevelt drew more than eight thousand guests. He greeted each attendee with a smile and a pleasant word as Mrs. Roosevelt shared gracious hosting.
President Roosevelt hosts a record crowd of 8100 at the White House New Year reception. Mrs Roosevelt and Alice Roosevelt attend as decor and ceremony highlight the event with diplomatic corps and military officers present. The crowd waited hours as gates remained open to admit all in line.
Seth Low former Brooklyn leader and Columbia president becomes mayor of New York on fusion ticket. Dem incumbents lose many offices while Partridge becomes Police Commissioner and Rives named corporation counsel. Riot of legation visits mark New Year as officials pledge reform and vigilance.
The New Year events in Berlin marked the court emerging from mourning with a morning service in the palace chapel attended by the imperial family and dignitaries. The emperor and empress later greeted eight ambassadors, spoke in their languages, and praised President Roosevelt.
Noon vid shows Mr. Van Wyck surrendering mayoral duties to the new mayor. He declares the term expires and wishes a peaceful and successful administration and a happy New Year.
Special Dispatch details J. D. Titthouser announcing he has located 40 acres of government land in Great Paris near Breadwater Bay and will file a homestead. He asserts title claims against the Montana Central Railway and plans a home and mattress factory, warning that a fierce legal fight lies ahead.
Albany January 1 The general assembly begins its annual session as Fred Nixon is elected speaker and Republican caucus nominees are confirmed. Governor Odell delivers his annual message urging tax reduction and focusing on New York City concerns while noting local restraint on expenditures.
The Maryland General Assembly began its session in Annapolis with Noble L. Mitchell elected speaker of the house and Senator John Hubner re elected president of the senate. All officers from the last session were re elected. Contests against six Republican seats in the house and one in the senate suggest Democrats seek a stronger majority. The US Senate race looms but James Gorman is expected to win easily.
Jennings, a Great Northern station near Kalispell, reports Patrick Sullivan fatally wounded his wife and killed his grandchild before dying from self inflicted wounds. A special train with the coroner and doctors reached the scene. Engineer Herson died, Fireman Wilcox injured, and Mrs Sullivan later hospitalized. Sullivan, once a Butte miner, and Mrs Sullivan ran a Jennings boarding house. the event caused widespread shock.
Michael Murphy died at St Pauls hospital at 1 30 this morning from gunshot wounds sustained yesterday morning in Butte. Officials and hospital staff could not obtain a statement from him before his death. Coroner Johnson will decide this morning when the inquest is to be held.
Detective Dr. Charlesworth of Pinkerton agency arrested B. K. Anderson alias B. A. Keith in Hamilton. Anderson, known in the state for a year, formerly worked for a railroad company in Arsanena and is accused of embezzling 38,000 from Stuttgart Arkansas, while acting agent.
The Candid Friend reports M. D. Blowitz has won the Paris correspondence of the Times and retires to private life. He is succeeded by Arthur Fullerton, an American, in London.
Hamilton Ohio January 1 reports the independent Wilson and McKally tobacco plant has been sold to Continental Tobacco Company. The plant ranks among the state's largest tobacco factories.
The event marked emancipation day with appropriate celebrations by African American participants who presented their building to exposition authorities.
Little Rock Arkansas January 15 reports that United States Senator James H. Berry's condition has improved materially and he expects to leave Washington tomorrow.
Official report from London dated January 1 shows Bent Jeanie wounded and Pain totaling 14,887. The figures are released by Hyoer Losses.
