After three days of testimony the jury rejected claims that enemies of the Western Federation of Miners caused the panic or hindered rescues. They found the stampede sparked by an alarm raised by unknown persons and noted only those with union ties could enter. Sixty five witnesses gave mixed accounts of a button seen near the door and the lack of a stranger rushing in at game start. Optimism rose in labor circles as officials and representatives discussed settlement possibilities.
