A massive explosion at a financial exchange caused the collapse of the floor and sent crowds fleeing. About 20 clerks were injured, most not killed, as firemen freed those trapped in debris. Investigations debated the blast’s source amid chaos as brokers hurried to safety and ambulances carried the injured.
News account reports three miners trapped at the Alps shaft after debris removal of about 24 feet. Prisoners receive food and water via a six inch pipe and are expected to be released within a month. Rescuers note the men are cheerful and in good health.
Sprvia dispatch from Phillipsburg reports Charles Cross, an ad section foreman at Stone, shot himself with a .22 rifle while hunting. His dog seized a rabbit. Cross struck the animal with the rifle, breaking the barrel. He was taken to Drummond and then to Mount Soul hospital. doctors held out hope for recovery. Crossman had recently arrived from Prince Edward Island. wife and infant remain with him at Stone.
At the Bernal coal mine near Carthage Sacora County nine miners were killed and several injured by a gas explosion at noon. Names include Gob Wilgoa Juan Archuleta Ignacio Archinluta and others. many workers were at dinner when the blast occurred. The town of Carthage lies 20 miles from San Antonio on a Santa Fe branch line.
Thomas Hayes a teller of the American Nations bank was rearrested on a warrant accusing embezzlement of 60000. The warrant swears out by the national bank examiner who has been scrutinizing the bank’s books since Hayes’ first arrest. He is charged with violating the national banking act for false deposits on Nov 21 1907 and embezzling checks totaling 4791. The court set an additional bond of 2100 and Hayes protests his sentence.
In St. Petersburg a tribunal convicted 167 of 169 First Duma signers of treason and sentenced them to three months in prison with loss of political rights. One detainee, Ranschwiil, is to be released immediately. full effect of the sentence starts January 20 following any appeals.
