Year 1900 Recap Shows Sound Iron and Steel Markets

Dun's review notes iron and steel markets remained sound in 1900 after a speculative collapse in spring. Blast furnace output fell from 296 on Feb 1 to 21 by Nov 1, stockpiles rose then declined, and finished goods demand rose. Copper tin steel rails prices shifted, and railcar demand stayed strong while bridges and ships faced tight material supply. Dry goods saw a mixed year with cotton and wool prices fluctuating, and South mill growth boosted production. Farmers benefited from high cotton prices despite smaller crops, while exports fell and Russian ports captured some trade.
