Pioneer Telegraphist Fredericks Dies After Runaway Horse Incident
Walter B. Fredericks, Helena pioneer telegrapher and insurance man, died after aiding a runaway horse on Warren Street. He restrained the horse, walked home feeling faint, then suffered a vomiting spell and died shortly after at home. Born in 1840 in Chatham Ontario, he helped build Montana's first telegraph and later ran the Helena office. survived by his wife Annie Ray and five children. He was active in Republican politics and a Mason Knight Templar. No funeral arrangements announced.

In Chicago on February 25 a man who claimed to be Thomas Ryan from San Francisco was fatally shot in a revolver duel with a city policeman. Two officers who aided a held up pedestrian arrested Ryan and another man. As they headed to the patrol box one prisoner dropped to his knees and fired at Policeman Trapp but missed. Trapp fired back and Ryan collapsed in the gutter. The second prisoner escaped.
