Dense fog shrouds the Strait of Dover as the Italian steamer Alcantara sinks after a collision with the Russian cadet training ship Tovarisch. The entire Alcantara crew is believed drowned, exact numbers unknown. an American vessel of similar size would have carried over 17 men.
