Washington February 19 Democratic leaders planned night sessions to push through essential legislation before the Sixty fourth congress ends next Saturday. The army appropriation bill and military academy bill lead, followed by the big sundry civil bill. Prohibition measures loom with district acts and postal bans under Senate amendment.
New York February 19. A food riot in Williamsburg Brooklyn saw women attack push cart peddlers and other eaters. A mass meeting was held at night with a committee to urge Mayor Mitchel to take immediate steps to ease high prices. Peddlers said vegetable prices rose sharply, making livelihoods hard. One dealer said he paid $10 for a barrel of potatoes and earned only 20 cents profit. He noted 18 carloads at a Brooklyn food depot, only two opened since last week. Onions were 4 cents each. Several hundred women attended, many weeping as they left.
New York reports a German U-boat off the French coast was sunk after a 40 minute engagement with the French steamer Guyane on January 22. The freighter fired with its 65 millimeter gun after the U boat closed to cross its bow, scoring a hit that caused the submarine to collapse. The Guyane, 2068 tons net with 37 crew, carried about 1000 tons of general cargo. no Americans were aboard.
Copenhagen reports that American Red Cross personnel in Germany including doctors and nurses are departing via Switzerland. About 400 Americans remain stranded waiting for ships as Denmark’s mail and banking are disrupted. A meeting is planned to urge US action to repatriate them. Count von Bernstorff’s return voyage from Halifax may resume within a week.
