Helena Feb 18 Montana Supreme Court paid tribute to late Associate Justice William Hedges DeWitt. Bar and court members read resolutions praising his life, court service, and integrity. Remarks by Attorney General James Donovan and Judge Henry Smith highlighted his learning, fairness, and fearless conduct. Court adjourned after readings and orders to publish the memorial.
Big Timber Montana Feb 18 report says Bill Johnson formerly Nat Young’s killer seeks vengeance on Sim Roberts. Johnson armed with revolver and Marlin rifle at depot to confront Roberts who is to testify in the Lee Large horse stealing case. Johnson’s past includes Idaho stage robbery and prison time.
Philadelphia voters backed the Republican city and state slate in municipal and ward races while other counties held local contests. Snowbound roads slowed turnout in parts of the state, but major cities reported strong participation and local issues dominated.
Herbert H. Matteson former cashier of the First National bank was arrested again in Great Falls on a new embezzlement charge involving 85 000 of the bank s funds. The total embezzled amounts reach 110 000 with personal losses around 50 000 to 60 000. Deputy Marshal Gage made the arrest under a warrant from U S Commissioner Cockrill following Panic Examiner James B Lazear s prior actions. Ball is set at 15 000 and he remains in custody awaiting payoff.
Honolulu reports Ernest Hogan the colored comedian and songwriter issued a formal challenge to Prince Cupid Kalanianaole after a dispute with local men hireling Hogan and a large party. Hogan invited the prince to a meeting with any weapons he prefers for a duel.
Andrew Bilant accused of killing Dave Davidson is brought before Judge Henry for the February term. He has starved himself to collapse and cannot walk, claiming I no kill Hobo Dave. Trial set for next Monday. defense may seek a continuance if his condition worsens. Close watch is kept on him to prevent self harm.
The preliminary examination of Ed Shufelt for the Henry Thompson killing proceeds. Dr Hoyt and Dr Clay said Thompson was shot five times, all in the back. Witnesses described the gun’s position and the shooting sequence as the case moves toward a murder conclusion.
In a House debate on the Indian appropriation bill, Mr. Wheeler of Kentucky defended his earlier attack on Secretary Hay and Lord Pauncefote and his remarks on the Prince Henry visit. Mr. Gillett and others criticized the remarks as an affront to a foreign nation, while Wheeler reaffirmed his stance and defended his right to speak truthfully.
A snow slide on Prince of Wales island buried three workers from Kayam Copper company's tunnel near Skowl Arm on February 3. Thomas McDevitt James Lodge and Charles Jensen perished while Charles Farran saved his life at the cook house. A rescue party recovered the bodies after an initial failure.
Ottawa reports the federal government has approved a water diversion concession for Klondike mining. The company must invest at least a quarter of a million dollars in the water system before taking over abandoned dams, after which owners may buy water under the approved rate. The order reportedly does not affect existing rights.
John K. Waite former deputy United States marshal and mining man died at St Peter s hospital from a self inflicted pistol shot in a Helena saloon. The 44 caliber revolver fired into his right temple left a skull fracture and brain exposure. Waite 43 years old had a long career in athletics mining and public service. He left a wife and five children and had recent financial troubles that contributed to his despondency.
The Temps reports Miss Ellen M. Stone has been freed by brigands and handed to the American legation dragoman in good health. The Reverend Tsilka is arrested for alleged complicity in the kidnapping. Twilka is identified as Tsilka’s husband. The Turkish authorities had suspected Tsilka of involvement.
The Navy reports repairs on the battleship Oregon at Puget Sound Navy Yard are nearly finished. The hole from her 1900 grounding has been sealed and she should be ready for duty again around March 1.
The Moscow correspondent of the Daily Mail reports Count Tolstoi has fallen ill again with fever returning and a weakened heart. The update comes from London dated February 18.
