In a party line clash over the Billings bench the name Hathborn is pressed by Johnston of Yellowstone. A vigorous protest targets the Republican majority urging voters in the new judicial district to decide the occupant. Many bills are under consideration as the dispute continues.
Helena February 15 Republicans in the Montana legislature caucused after adjournment to choose between initiative and referendum measures. The Murray bill was selected as a party measure with support in both houses, despite some opposition. The conference plan proposed 8 percent for initiative and 8 percent for referendum, based on Oregon law. The caucus also agreed to a bill cutting salaries and numbers of county deputies except in Silver Bow, superseding Bennett's reclassification there.
In Helena on February 15 the house debated creating the Thirteenth judicial district covering Yellowstone and Rosebud counties. Republicans faced a revolt over nominating Fred H. Hathhorn of Billings as judge, with Democrat Johnston denouncing party influence and urging voters to decide the bench locally. Johnston's amendments failed 39 to 30, and the bill advanced along party lines as Governor’s nominees awaited confirmation.
General Wallace praised a living Immortals larger than ten thousand in uniforms of light led by Abraham Lincoln. He described their ranks as equal, with no officers or privates, standing in Heaven’s bivouac while others wait in reserve. The speech cited the Front as their arena.
Governor Pennypacker on board of pardons recommendation withdraws death warrants for Mrs Kate Edwards and Samuel Greason who were to hang in Reading for murder. Greason's case returns to the Pennsylvania supreme court, with possible further hearings next month for both condemned.
In Reading on February 15, Mrs. Edwards sobbed on her jail cot as news of a rehearing in the Greason case and a continuance for her, granting a possible new lease on life, spread through the prison. Her reactions showed the strain of awaiting a fresh chance, while officials explained the legal delay.
The prisoner, who expected execution tomorrow, learns she will not be hanged and must testify for Greason. She reflects on her prolonged misery and relief, while Mrs Edwards expresses gratitude and remorse for her actions. Greason remarks that the decision was predictable.
In Washington on February 15 the House Public Lands Committee favored a bill by Representative Dixon to establish a land office at Billings Montana. Dixon discussed timber lands for the Flathead Indians and drafted an amendment authorizing a 5000 acre reserve for future fuel. Senator Clark supports the amendment.
Washington Feb 15 The president will leave Washington about March 25 for San Antonio to attend the Rough Riders reunion. A final decision on an extended hunting trip in Colorado is not yet made and arrangements are in place for a jack rabbit hunt after the reunion.
Coroners jury in Fort Benton rules Cecil Kirkey died from a blow by William Harris while both men were jailed for petty offenses. Kirkey toppled after a jab on the left jaw and later died from brain blood clots. Harris reportedly dragged him to his cell as a jailer learned of the incident hours later.
An Indian buck fired with whiskey went on a killing spree 30 miles south of Tonopah Nevada. He killed three squaws and a fellow Indian then fled to the mountains. A posse of 43 Indians is pursuing him and he remains at large.
Noted Indianan, known for answering calls in the early days, has died. The figure widely recognized for service in communications passed away, leaving behind a legacy in local outreach and public contact work.
Gen Lew Wallace author of Ben Hur and veteran of Mexican and Civil Wars died at his Crawfordsville home at age 78. He had suffered a wasting illness for years and his deathbed scene was calm with his final words saying he was ready to meet his Maker. Funeral arrangements were not yet announced.
Lew Wallace was born in Brookville Indiana on April 10 1827 the son of David Wallace a governor and lieutenant governor. He served as adjutant general of Indiana and rose to major general in the Civil War notable at Fort Donelson Shiloh and in later diplomacy including governorship of New Mexico minister to Turkey and ambassadorial work. His novels Ben Hur The Fair God Tale of the Christ and The Prince of India established him as a major American writer with enduring fame.
