General Bell, chief of staff, urged Congress to raise enlisted pay along Dick-Ceperson lines with four features. Create warrant officer grade, adjust pay scales to 75 to 2, readjust tiers, offer three months reenlistment bonus, and raise marks for high attainment. Estimated average boost 23.9 percent.
John Hays Hammond retires from the Guggenheim Exploration Company after health-related departure. A. Chester Beatty named his successor, with Beatty handling duties since Hammond’s Westward health trip. Hammond, famed for gold mining work in South Africa, underwent appendicitis surgery in San Francisco.
Ginn Fraosleco Feb 1 9 John Hays Hammond via his private secretary denied this morning that he severed ties with the Guggenheims. His mining magnate contract runs until March 1 with no renewal decision until then. The secretary said the appendicitis operation was very successful and Hammond hopes to be in good health soon and resume greater activity in the mining field after convalescence.
Special Dispatch from Billings reports stockholders approved raising capital from 20000 to 22600 dollars and extending the canal five miles nearer the city. The ditch now runs about 35 miles, irrigating a large fertile area between the ditch and Billings.
Stevensville notes: regular monthly meeting lacked a quorum and Alderman May was declared vacant. Louis May elected to fill the seat. Treasurer Dr C Lewis reports receipts of 3128.74 and disbursements 1973.58, balance 1455.21. A mass meeting about a dormitory for the Stevensville training school drew support and opposition. several pledged funds and urged reopening this year. Indictments charging perjury were returned against former New Jersey Governor Foster M Voorhees and Frank A H Combes by a grand jury. The counts relate to false sworn statements in 1904 about alleged liabilities for policy holders while Voorhees was president and Combes secretary of Bankers Life Insurance, which had failed earlier. Pittsburg February 1 the United States weather bureau reports no flood danger at present and the crest of the flood is expected to reach tomorrow not exceeding 14 feet the danger line at 2 feet. The rivers today were not rising enough to cause a flood and a cold spell is expected tonight.
