In Helena the Montana house spends the day on the substitute railroad commission bill. The senate has Brennen bill status and action remains pending as the house prepares to vote tomorrow.
Lewistown reports W B Morrison aged 39 a Montana Lumber bookkeeper killed himself with a large cocaine dose at a rooming house. Native of St John s New Brunswick he had worked in Helena and Great Falls, had a drinking problem after testifying in the Bridgman case, left letters pledging self destruction and had about 4000 dollars in insurance. His brother a banker in Ottawa and other relatives reside in Spokane and St John s. The Odd Fellows will handle the body after tomorrow s inquest.
A major fire in Mobile on February 13 destroyed the Battle House and Commercial hotel plus adjacent structures. The total loss is about 400000 dollars. No fatalities. Fire Chief Price and Fireman McMahon injured by falling bricks.
In Great Falls on February 13 the condemned killer George Hliboka faced a second sanity examination to decide if he will be hanged or sent to an insane asylum. He resisted officers during court, while doctors and caretakers testified on his mental state and eating pattern.
President Roosevelt will not present the general arbitration treaties after the senate amended them. Secretary Hay said the senate action ends the effort, as changes render the measures a step backward and incompatible with their spirit and purpose.
Washington reports Senator Cullom chairing the foreign relations committee endorses the senate's right to amend arbitration treaties. He says the president must keep the senate informed, perhaps taking more time, but sees no disharmony with the president's treaty making power.
In Essen Prussia on February 13 the coal strike is completely finished. Full shifts returned to work in the mines today marking the end of the stoppage and resumption of coal production.
Chicago February 13 Johann Hoch argues he did not love any wife calling his matches business ventures. He admits advertising for women over 45 to find easy targets for money and flattery as his method. Carpenter George Sleyter claims Hoch was a janitor at Holmes castle and paid rent in 1892 but Hoch denies the charge. Police inspector Shippy doubts Hoch’s 1892 employment claim and says he did not come to the country until 1895.
Mrs Emile Fisher Hoch the latest wife of Johann Hoch visits the police inspector to demand the money she claims is hers. Hoch remains unmoved and the plea continues with the wife’s insistence on restitution as she says she needs the funds.
Massachusetts Democrat Sullivan and New York’s Hearst exchange severe denunciations in the House over the freight rate bill. Hearst is accused of homicide by implication and Speaker Cannon halts the exchange, as the dispute centers on Hearst papers and alleged political malice.
