Citizens honor the memory of Lincoln as every city and town marks the martyr president birth anniversary. Schools close and many businesses suspend operations across the nation in quiet observance.
Speeches and banquet events mark a large scale Lincoln birthday celebration in Chicago. Leaders from Lafayette Young to Curtis Guild Jr and Senator McLaurin address themes of Lincoln's legacy and U S relations abroad, highlighting reciprocity with China and a move toward world power. The day includes schools and public buildings closing and major banquets at the Marquette club.
The Lincoln club in Grand Rapids celebrated Lincoln's birthday with a banquet. Congressman William Alden Smith hosted guests from Washington. Minister Wu addressed the gathering reflecting on the Civil War and slavery, noting its eventual role in unifying the nation and pushing progress.

Earl Greene and Emma Forsythe planned to marry in Livingston but were blocked when Emma s father B C Forsythe arrived at the depot as they boarded the train. The father forced them off the coach and efforts to wed were postponed until a license and preacher are secured. Greene works on Forsythe ranch and won Emma s heart after asking for her hand. the father opposed the match.
Chicago reports Prof Charles W Pearson resigns as English literature professor at Northwestern University amid disputes over biblical infallibility. He asks for a church dismissal letter, later recalled, and plans to continue teaching until a successor is found with salary through Jan 1 1903. The same date notes Washington host to the first international woman suffrage conference with Carrie Chapman Catt presiding and discussions on a women’s postage stamp and state historians.
James Proffitt a Brakett Creek sheepman 30 miles north of Livingston was brought to Livingston with a compound fracture of the right leg from a heavy machine falling on him. Doctors strive to save the limb but prognosis is doubtful.
