Explosion in New Mexico claims 120 lives while a Canadian mine near Cumberland reports 33 rescued. Of the victims, 14 are identified as white and 17 as Celestial Republic nationals, with work near completion noted as rescue crews press on. The toll overall stands at 153 from these incidents.
The Cumberland mine disaster leaves 38 dead with 31 bodies moved from the wreck. Six injured men hover between life and death as a coroner orders an exhaustive inquiry. Authorities, including William Sloan and George Wilkingon, coordinate investigations and await assistance from nearby towns.
Washington February ninth. Army engineers estimate a notional cost near 1 00 000 000 dollars for a Nicaragua route canal. President Harding and Cabinet deem the project prohibitive for years as the Panama canal profits are seen as funding only.

Two aviators were killed during maneuvers 37 miles east of Laredo Texas when their airplane went into a nose spin and crashed. The Kaseline tank exploded on impact and the machine burned. both men's names were not yet learned.
The House voted 291 to 44 to approve the British debt settlement amendment to the funding statute. The roll call showed 227 Republicans and 63 Democrats for, plus one socialist, Meyer London, while 43 Democrats and one Republican opposed. The measure authorizes settlements with other debtor nations and dispatches to the Senate for prompt action, with no soldiers bonus rider attached.
Caspar authorities nabbed Juan De Dios Archuleta and Elias Archuleta, wanted in the slaying of New Mexico lieutenant governor Antonio D Vargas on July 17, 1914 at Ojo Caliente. Both men, workers at Casper Standard refinery, admitted identities but denied NM involvement. A $500 reward to Denver detectives and Casper police accompanies their capture after a long manhunt.
Reporters say the Angora government has made no reply to ten Allied demands while several foreign warships linger in Smyrna harbor. The situation in Smyrna remains tense with few British vessels outside the port as authorities continue to press for compliance.

Ruhrort barge traffic. food shortages worsen. new March 15 measures to restrict food, including breakfast eggs and limited meat. Rail strikes persist. Rhine canal navigation reopened after sabotage. Ruhr shopkeepers warned to resist requisitions and avoid dealings with French or Belgians.
James F. McGregor of Great Falls Montana, after a four day hunt through New York hotels for his bride on honeymoon, came to police tonight to report she had not returned. They arrived last Friday and Mrs. McGregor did not come back after telephoning friends Tuesday.
An official communique from Republican HQ declares surrender talks with Eamon de Valera and irregular forces cannot be considered. The Dublin government move, led by Defense Minister Richard Mulcahy, marks a new phase as the Dail is briefed on ongoing discussions and the Irish conflict stance.
A swept Portugal today reports numerous deaths and great damage. Nine barques loaded with merchandise foundered at Oporto and hundreds of fishing boats went down in the Tagus River. Fish canning factories at Setubal were blown down and houses in the provinces were unroofed by the wind as various districts were flooded.
Rescue crews fought through wreckage of Dawson mine No 1 as 94 bodies were recovered. Only two workers initially in the mine survived. Officials, including US Bureau of Mines rescuers Aziz and Hanna, investigate cause while hoping remaining miners may be saved.
The seven day limit fixed by the allied council for withdrawal of armed elements from Memel expired today but was extended for two days. Diplomatic circles hold hope the situation will be resolved promptly as the extension offers a pause in the tense region.
In Dawson New Mexico on February 9 two miners emerged alive from mine No 1 of the Philip-Dodge company after a deadly blast. Charles Candale and Paint Martines guided rescuers into the shaft and directed escape efforts during the perilous recovery.
Sir Horace Plunkett Irish Free State representative escaped a noisy crowd of republican sympathizers at Town Hall by exiting through a different door. Police provided protection as he spoke, predicting no early peace in Ireland and blaming England's two governments for the impasse. He urged reconciliation but said it is impossible now.
