Helena reports the Montana legislature kills Lannin's blacklist ing bill after heated debate over employment checks and mine safety. Lawmakers also push retrenchment to limit county deputies while considering a new railroad commission bill and a controversial marriage and divorce measure amid party splits.
August W. Machen and Diller B. Groff surrendered to the U S marshal in Washington and were taken to the cell room of City Hall after being sentenced to two years and a $10 000 fine for postal conspiracy Samuel A Groff was brought to court from illness and joined the others in detention The three defendants were ordered to begin immediate confinement at Moundsville penitentiary West Virginia
Harrisburg reports large nationwide petition drive asking Governor Pennypacker to commute the death sentence of Mrs. Kate Edwards. The governor can only commute a death sentence to life imprisonment with a written recommendation from the board of pardons, the prepared circular explains.
Salem February 7. The Oregon Senate adopted a resolution with a vote of thanks to United States Senator John H. Mitchell and expressed confidence in him while agreeing to adjourn sine die not later than February 17. Some members opposed endorsing a longer adjourned session to name a possible successor if Mitchell loses his seat.
Reading Pennsylvania reports letters from across the country urging mercy for Mrs Kate Edwards. Supporters argue she was influenced by her husband and was not fully responsible for the crime. Attorney Oliver Lent gathers petitions, with as many as 5000 signers expected to seek pardon.
Special Dispatch reports no new city cases today in Billings. At the sheep camp of Fred Awe, 30 miles north, several smallpox cases were found and Ol iver Bessette, a trained nurse, with Fred Morris, a fumigator, were sent to care for them. They will not be brought to the city hospital.
Kalispell on West Second Street reports Antone Stadler found hanging in his attic cabin last night by police. Coroner took charge at midnight. likely death by suicide from Sunday. Stadler, financially well off, left a brother Louis Stadler in Helena in cattle business.
E W Morrison commander of the Fitzwilliam expedition says the treasure hunt near Cocos Island is over and the ship lies at Panama. Dr W H Ainger accompanies him. several crew reportedly injured in a cliff explosion during blasting. Morrison provides few details.
Joseph H. Manley aged 62, former chairman of the national executive committee of the Republican Party, died suddenly at his Augusta home from apoplexy. He had suffered ill health for years and was found dead in bed by family members.
At Bloomington on February 7 Samuel Gompers finished a 30 minute speech at the national convention of tailors. Seligman Nehus of Pittsburgh proposed a one man committee to verify the union label on Gompers clothing. Gompers displayed the label and urged Nehus to proceed. delegates cheered. The Journeymen Tailors of America rejected a socialist party endorsement by a vote of 192 to 28.
Justice Stafford in equity court ruled against Warren B. Wilson a Chicago lawyer who sought an injunction to stop the secretary of the treasury from paying Panama treaty funds The suit claimed the Panama canal act was unconstitutional and that the United States could not acquire foreign territory

Washington February 7 after a long session the senate approved the joint statehood bill admitting Oklahoma and New Mexico while excluding Arizona the Bard amendment to add New Mexico was narrowly adopted then rejected on a tie vote and laid on the table the Mormon question and polygamy were raised during debate and the discussion touched other western territories indicating tense national politics and border state changes.

Lechs, Russian Poland, Feb 7 factories opened but workers were scarce. At one plant men returned only for lunch, fearing bullets from the street. Another plant stopped work. By Feb 9 large manufacturers may dismiss workers and shut mills. Strikers grow more aggressive, today entering a mill and wrecking machinery.
The central committee of the Russian socialist democratic party issues a violent proclamation urging workers to rally under the red flag and prepare for armed action. Reports from Poland and the Caucasus describe uprisings, troop deployments, and disrupted rail traffic as strikes intensify.
The Procurator General Soininen of Finland was shot in St Petersburg on February 7 believed to be due to political motives. Officials say he was marked for vengeance by rival parties viewing him as a traitor, with his strong independent post drawing opposition from dominant local influences. Continued on page MR.
