Steubenville Ohio December 29 Notices were made out calling on about 20 families of striking miners in Jefferson county to pay ten months of rent to coal companies by January 15 under threat of eviction. The families reside in Warren Mount Pleasant Smithfield and Springfield counties and form the bulk of the affected population. Officers would serve the notices at once. Earlier Belair in Belmont County reported UMWA would seek court restraint against eviction writs serving on 16 000 families of tubers in that area.
Mrs Hughes mother of Associate Justice Charles E. Hughes died after midnight at her residence. Widow of the Rev David Hughes formerly of New York she was born in Middletown Delaware County on November 22 1880. The obituary notes her son the famed jurist and states the death occurred in Washington.
President Wilson appeals to American shippers not to mix available goods with contraband items. Interest grows among diplomats and Congressmen as tensions rise over enforcement and lawful imports.
