A marauding group of masked raiders began a range war in the Tongue River country killing about two thousand sheep. Local shepherds report heavy losses and fear further attacks as authorities investigate the incident.
Special dispatch from Miles City reports 2 000 Daupt and Selway sheep killed at Tooney creek near the Tongue river by masked raiders. The attack intensified farmer and rancher opposition to sheepmen’s range use and hints at a coming range war with Powder River region settlers uniting to block encroachments.
In a Bisbee area camp along the Southwestern line 28 miles from Bisbee two gunmen shot Jesse Johnson, known as Kelly, after he attempted a hold up at Mitchells saloon. Johnson died, bartender John Roberts was wounded, and a firefight ensued with deputies pursuing cowboys heading toward Silver Creek.
A Pinar del Rio delegation visited General Wood proposing a 25 percent tariff cut on Cuban sugar for the United States and a 50 percent reduction in export duties on tobacco to aid island industries. In 1891 Eddie McGee alias Burns and a female accomplice posed as his wife Lizzie Burns and Lizzie Cleyvidence to abduct Banker Beals' son. Both served five years in the Missouri penitentiary. The gang’s real leader Ralston, a self styled Denver detective, secured a $5,000 ransom and was never caught.
Samuel MacDonald who killed F H Morris, auditor for the War Department, died at Emergency hospital from self inflicted wounds. He cut his throat and shot himself near the heart after the murder and refusal to eat, dying at 7 this morning. Medical staff cited his strong will to die as the cause.
The woman remained at home in bed under the family physician while investigators questioned Goldie Whitehead. Police say she was not in Savannah the night of the murder as evidence is reviewed.
