Jack Johnson, the Galveston star, defeated Tommy Burns of Canada in the fourteenth round at Rushcutters Bay to become the world heavyweight champion. Police stopped the bout as Burns could not defend himself, Johnson dominated with power and skill, and betting favored the new champion as the arena filled with spectators from across the country.
The Salvation Army in Butte, led by Capt. JH Durand and Pierce Dowell, collected money, clothes, toys, and groceries through donations and street kettles.
