Hobart Clayberg an 11 year old boy was abducted in Kalamazoo by two men who blindfolded him and forced him to walk eleven miles to Mattawan. They robbed him of a small amount of money and fled. He was returned home the same night after telegraphing for help.
Helena reports a Kalamazoo kidnapping attempt on Hobart Clayberg son of Attorney John B. Clayberg. Two tramps seized the 11 year old, robbed him, searched his watch, then released him after fearing the boy’s father. Hobart wired for help and was returned unharmed.
In Pueblo Colorado Maggie Hoel aged 18 vanished from her guardian’s home three miles west of town after a Sunday afternoon absence. A carriage with white horses and a richly dressed woman were seen nearby, footprints point toward the Arkansas river, and guards and volunteers search the area without locating her. Her guardian is Charles Beatty and a local lover aids the investigation as suspicions of kidnapping grow.
Report from Cleveland dated December 4 states that heavy CP interests are acquiring the Clover Leaf stock and that Canadian Pacific will soon take possession of the line.
In Crawfordsville Indiana on December 4 Joseph Douglas shot and fatally wounded Frank Parrish and Charles Doyle who had come to see his wife. The incident marks a jealousy fueled murder case with Parrish and Doyle dying from their injuries.
The men went to the rear door, kicked it open after no reply, and Douglas fired through a window with a shotgun, tearing Parrish’s face. A second shot hit Doyle in the back from 15 feet. Parrish had attracted trouble over Douglas’ wife for some time. Doyle was a soldier of San Juan hill.
The steamship Olympia departed Tacoma for the Orient carrying about 20500 bags of Washington flour tobacco beer and general merchandise. Four first class passengers include missionaries John Woodberry Dr R Wong Miss E Jones and D Martin heading back to continue work in China after the Boxer uprising. There are 50 Chinese and Japanese steerage passengers with 40 voluntary returnees and 10 deported by the government.
Washington reports a war department plan to keep about 60 000 troops in the Philippines until municipal government programs are in place. Congress is urged to act on army legislation, with a February homecoming of volunteers postponed until replacements arrive. A $250 re-enlistment bounty is favored.
A Toledo report says workers near Frankfort Michigan unearthed what may be Father Marquette remains. Only a skull and imperfect bones survived with a rust streak near the head. Michigan Historical Society maintains proof he was buried there in 1875. officials promise a full investigation.
In Scranton Pennsylvania the motormen and conductors strike began yesterday and persists today. Only two strikers have deserted and operate one of two cars outside the city. otherwise service is tied up from Pittston to Forest City and across towns in the Lackawanna valley.
Coroner reports Ead ward Sanford known as Joe Barr died from brain hemorrhage after a boxing bout with Joseph Kerrigan at the Athletic Club of Philadelphia. Kerrigan is held for grand jury action. Referee and others were discharged after Saturday night arrests.
The pope knelt before the holy door and led a solemn rite with the Sistine choir. He laid cement bricks and placed a casket of medals, then Cardinal Vannutelli and four others repeated the ceremony. About 80,000 spectators witnessed the event in New Haven.
W. F. Meyer Montana state senator elect faces assault charges from Dora Fullerton after an incident on December 13 at Meyer's bank office. Fullerton alleges Meyer grabbed her and demanded a kiss, leading to a court hearing set for the same day as his legislative contest. Legal action proceeds with attorney representations and a $600 bond amid ongoing town talk.
New York reports the death of William Francis Sage a playwright and dramatic critic at his home. He was brother to Abbie Sage Richardson whose death in Italy preceded his by about two weeks. Sage suffered a paralytic attack linked to grief and had prior episodes. Born in Manchester New Hampshire he worked in Boston before moving to New York twelve years ago writing plays and critiquing drama. His only produced work Destiny opened at McVicker's Chicago running two weeks and drew on Dickens Tale of Two Cities.
The national judiciary of the Junior Order of American Mechanics ruled the loyalist faction valid in Pennsylvania. It enjoins William A. Pike D Wood H S Heckman RP Mench and F Padger from serving as officers of the state council. The insurgent faction had refused per capita tax under current representation. The case is now in state courts.
John F. Farley a wealthy Caledonia farmer was found dead with a bullet hole in his head on the Milwaukee Kenosha and Racine railroad tracks. An investigation is underway in Racine Wisconsin.
Rome reports the pope performed the closing of the holy door at St. Peter's with pomp and vast crowds. He entered at 1 a.m. and left after prayers at 1 p.m. after blessing the congregation with holy water and the ceremonial gold trowel.
Depositions were taken today in the action of Mrs. H. B. Plant against Ex-Judge Lynde Harrison. Harrison is an executor of the will of Mr. Plant who left about 1 000 000. Mrs. Plant seeks probate in this state rather than New York to increase her share.
Frank P. Bennett, famed American Indian scout and survivor of the famous Buffalo Bill outfit, shot himself in Honolulu signaling a possible link to the morphine poisoning death of Clara Schneider. Police tied the cases to Bennett borrowing $400 from Schneider as she planned to return home to Seattle. The post mortem confirmed morphine poisoning. Bennett’s body was found three days after his suicide. The British ship Tearus and the US training ship Adams arrived at Hilo during the period.
Omaha reports the lantern used to flag Mr. Cudahy on the ransom drive was found seven and a half miles west of Omaha on Center street near Craddock Grove. Investigators identify Pat Crowe as a light complexioned man linked to the case after a witness described him. A torn sleeve and pant legs were unearthed, and tracks, corn, and twine indicate the ransom signal point and recent horse activity.
Governor Tilley leaves for New Zealand with the Abarenda to secure coal and ship repairs while E J Dorn assumes station command. District meetings praise the US government, push laws on taxation and mats at ceremonies, and address disputes between missionary groups.
