Novel Joy Ride Taken by Bandit in Seattle
Seattle, Dec. 22 The lone bandit who commandeered a touring car last night forced the chauffeur to drive about the city. He robbed a saloon and a store, fought policemen and victims, and was captured early today. He gave his name as Alexander Thompson, 24, a sailor. Steve Kalles was shot in the head and seriously wounded, George Fujimoto, a Japanese man, was shot in the legs. The highwayman took charge of the auto with C. E. Oslund driving toward the business district, then forced Oslund to stop, entered a saloon, and had the bartender hand over 40. He exchanged shots with a patron, fired at a motorcyclist, and dueled with officers as the car sped along Jackson Street at 45 mph. Kalles was wounded during the chase. The car escaped the motor cycle officers, then the bandit dumped it at Twenty eighth Avenue and Madison Street. He then raided a grocery at Nineteenth Avenue and Madison, took 12 dollars, and fled after a pistol duel with the proprietor and a later confrontation with a policeman. About half an hour later a patrolman found him and arrested him in the street.
