In Washington on December 13 a bill for revision and codification of the postal service seeks a director general of posts to manage the department while the postmaster general remains the cabinet head. Progress is slow as members push pension measures, with multiple quorum calls and roll calls delaying action.
In Schenectady Nevada on December 19 police moved to halt a two round bout between Jack Sullivan and Forky Wynn. Sam Langford Caray and Flynn were arrested before the bout, with warrants reportedly issued by Rev. George R. Lunn editor of a socialist newspaper. Police were seeking Sullivan.
In Rochester Ora Morningstar was defeated twice by Jake Schaefer the billiards wizard. Morningstar posted 400 to Schaefer 200 in the morning and 282 to 200 in the afternoon, then 219 to 200 in the evening, continuing Schaefer’s dominance in the session.
A scrambled result list details six races with horses and odds. J A Barra wins the first at 1 to 1 with Anna May second and Tellsnicker third. Pawhuaka wins the second in 1:06 4 5 with Just second and Muxdico third. Aroze wins the fourth mile race with Jim Gaffnay second and Miles third. Novalin wins the fifth with Clem second and Nebulasis third. Proeper wins the sixth at seven furlongs with Biskra second and Tima third.
In Memphis on December 19 Johnny Conlon, claimant of the bantamweight world title, defeated Earl Denning of Chicago in five rounds at the National Athletic Club. A right-hand punch to the jaw floored Denning and Conlon was awarded the decision.
New Orleans reports James Barry and Tony Ross will clash in Memphis next Monday night after their bout in New Orleans was canceled by authorities. Racing results from Pensacola list multiple races and finishes with times and payouts across six events, including Givonni Ragglo and Donaldo winning, and Carew, Grenade, and Horlon among top finishers.
In Kansas City on Dec 11 Tommy Bresnahan of Omaha and Tommy Dixon of Memphis battled to a 10 round draw after Bresnahan led seven rounds with in fighting, while Dixon rallied late. Johnny McCarthy of San Francisco defeated Church Larsen of Chicago in 10 rounds, Larsen staying the limit despite a rough run. In Boston Owen Moran challenged Ad Wolgast for the lightweight title, offering a $5,000 side bet and vowing to meet Wolgast anytime.
A local boxing exhibition drew little prize fighting presence as crowd fear of sheriff interference reduced attendance. Notable bouts included Stevens vs Schultz in a 15 minute grappling display, Allard vs Gaslin ending in a draw, Miles vs Johns with Johns declared winner, and Lawrence vs Lawrence a four round draw. Several other matchups produced tame, clinch-heavy rounds with no decisive falls.
Lisbon reports that a constitutional assembly is expected in April to form a single chamber parliament of 209 members. The provisional government calls for a 209 member body to elect a president for five years and outlines a naval expansion including three 3,000 ton battleships and six submarines.
Washington report: U S Supreme Court upholds Mississippi law abrogating the fellow servant rule for railway workers. A foreman, at work when a derailed train caused a car to overturn and his death, prompted the legal question. The decision rests on the theory that a sued laborer is within the general line of hazard inherent in railway work.
New York December 18 A waiter named Samuel Herman received a knife wound to the heart about three quarters of an inch long but a surgeons report says the wound nearly closed and he returned to work today The stabbing occurred during a pranl with a customer and is noted as the seventh successful operation of its kind cited by the medical profession
A fire at the residence of Id Richards on Hast Broadway yesterday was caused by a defective chimney. The blaze was extinguished with an estimated loss of about $25.
Officer Cusick arrested John James on a burglary charge after a break in at a cabin. Velooze introduces new ladies shoes described as easy on the foot and warm, selling for $1 at the Real Root store, 36 North Main Street, a suggested Christmas gift.
