Nationwide Prohibition passes in the House by 282 to 128 as a seven year ratification window is adopted. Former Secretary Bryan greets Webb on the floor, while galleries erupt in cheers. The Senate previously approved the identical measure with the longer period and the president’s signature is not required for the amendment to go to state legislatures.

Sacramento report says a son of the governorship’s mansion was killed when an explosion tore through the mansion shortly after midnight. Officials say the blast occurred in Sacramento California and conditions are under investigation.
Washington officials report the senate military committee closed five days of sharp questioning of Major General Crozier over delays in weapon supply. The panel unanimously approved his four year renomination as chief of ordnance. Col Isaac Lewis, Lewis machine gun inventor, will testify tomorrow. Hearings will likely continue through the Christmas recess. The house naval sub committee also began arranging hearings on Navy Department activities and plans to sit through the holidays.
Washington December 17 Rear Admiral Frederick R Harris asked to be relieved as general manager of the Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation and return to his chief of the Navy Bureau of Yards and Docks post His request will be granted and Charles A Pies of Chicago will be named to succeed him
Washington observers report Republican opposition in a Senate executive session over Wilsons appointments of state explosive inspectors. Senator Penrose led the charge, calling most appointees deserv ing democrats or mongrel republicans and lacking fitness. Democrats Ashurst and Pittman defended the nominations, noting many duties are administrative.
Dedham Massachusetts December 18 Miss Harriet A Varney a nurse from West Upton was found not guilty of the murder of Mrs Pauline Keyes the ten months bride of Boston real estate man George H Keyes by a county superior court jury after four hours deliberation.
The forecast calls for rain in the west and central portions with colder conditions in the east. Tuesday will be unsettled with showers and gradual cooling into Wednesday across the area.
Washington reports the food administration attempts to present its side on Cuban sugar contracts were blocked when the state department deemed further discussion inadvisable. H Curtis Lindley sought to question Claus Spreckels, who had attacked the administration on the witness stand, as Hoover awaited reply after a tense committee session. Hoover then left for the White House, saying he would brief the president.
Col E M House arrives in Washington after attending the Interallied War Conference in Europe. He goes directly to the White House to submit a personal report to President Wilson.
The drive led by C W Goodale opens with large donations and many renewals as 81 precincts and local business groups organize for a continuing effort through next Monday. Reports from Ottawa and Vancouver confirm Sir Robert Borden's Union government has won a decisive victory with conscription and a large majority. Soldier ballots will raise government seats, with 16 districts heard showing 128 for the government and 87 for the opposition, plus four deferred. Provinces list Union gains across Ontario Quebec Nova Scotia and British Columbia.
Spectal Dispatch reports that Kinky Evans once guarded Muckie McDonald during a three year labor trouble in Butte was shot and killed at Perkir cabin in Carpenter Creek. Evans confronted Perkir about a safe cracking and took a padlock chair alarm clock, then Perkir shot him causing fatal arterial injury. Perkir arrested and held for examination in Roundup.
The reminiscence recalls Evans a 30 year old miner who was active with the miners union in 1914 Butte and Silver Bow county. he aided in the walkout at Blypic Rock and later fled with McDonald and Bradley when martial law was imposed. Evans faced charges for aiding escapes but was allowed at large and left Butte for mining camps. In the aftermath McDonald and Bradley faced prison terms while Bradley died and McDonald served time in Idaho.
