Reports from London describe heightened German raids on England’s north coast with Scarborough Hartlepool and Whitby suffering fatalities and damage. British French and Belgian forces push west with modest gains. In Flanders, British and French attacks on Westende fail to budge entrenched Germans while gains occur inland. In Argonne Woevre and Alsace heavy fighting persists as German counterstrokes continue. Russia plans a strategic withdrawal to form a new line in its own territory, potentially easing Cracow and forcing Austro German forces to fight farther from key railways. Rome cites Austrian forces admitting 100,000 troops sent to Serbia and their defeat by that nation.
Dispatches from Seneva via Paris report that Servian forces captured thousands of Austrian troops after a victory. Slavic retreating troops reportedly surrendered with cries of welcome to comrades, while some Austrian officers reportedly deserted or were shot. In El Pago on December 16 the first major battle between Carranza and Villa forces unfolds near San Pedro de las Colonias east of Torreon. About 5,000 Carranza troops from Coahuila collide with a slightly larger Villa force. reinforcements rush to the front as heavy artillery opens fire. Villa commands the convention forces seeking to seize Torreon and sever Villa's northern links.
German ships bombarded Hartlepool Whitby and Scarborough at dawn, causing civilian and military casualties. Official reports say 110 total casualties, with 7 killed and 14 wounded among troops and many civilians dead or injured. The fleet escaped in mist after exchanges with coast guard vessels. London awaits further details as the public reacts with anger and calls for recruiting boosts.
