Temperatures plunge as low as 19 below at a resident's home and thermometer readings vary across Butte. Water pipes freeze in poorly built rentals while many new cheap houses prove unfit for winter. The Paul Park soup kitchen reopens to aid cold, underdressed men wandering the streets. Saloon warmth and free lunches become a reluctant shelter for those with little to spend.
