Montana mine inspector William Walsh presents a voluminous 1908 report to Governor Norris detailing production near forty seven million nine hundred forty five thousand dollars with copper fields supplying over 40 percent of world output. He cites ventilation gains, safety focus, placer mining notes, and Butte's dominance amid vast mineral wealth.
In 1902 a dispute between William A. Clark of the San Pedro line and E. H. Harriman of the Oregon Short Line led to an injunction against the latter then an agreement. William D. Special Dispatch reports Mites City defense witness Seward Hosp admit killing Norman Thetford while claiming life was in danger. Hosp, a professional piano player, said Thetford and Leonard threatened him and he fired after Thetford seized his gun. He surrendered to Officer Jones as wires failed and denies ill will toward either man. Thexford’s near deathbed statement was excluded as unreliable.
E B Cushman former cashier of the defunct State Bank and Trust company now with Langley Cushman brokerage was indicted by the Tonopah grand jury on embezzlement tied to the bank. He was arrested in Reno and released on 10000 bond with T Bender and W G Harris acting as sureties.
Paris dispatch says an imperial edict pledges the throne to continue the late emperor's program including granting a constitution to the empire at the end of nine years.
The Helena city council, citing repeated court defeats for the Helena Water Works over municipal water plans, votes to sue for 210000 in damages. An advisory citizens committee of 154 citizens will oversee costs and history of the project.
In New York on December 3 an exchange with Police Inspector McCafferty helped Garrett E Lamb of Iowa locate a pearl necklace worth 15000 dollars missing since February. Lamb identified the piece after a Memphis burglary where about 25000 dollars in jewelry were stolen. The seller asked 8000 dollars for the necklace.
Washington reports Rep Theodore Burton of Ohio has been offered the treasury secretary post. He has studied finance, joined the banking and currency panel last winter, and would rather be secretary than anything else but prefers a senate seat and will wait for Ohio's senatorial situation to clarify.
A White House conference to address Montana forest and vegetation destruction caused by copper smelter fumes concluded with plans to invite copper company representatives to Washington before any action. Participants included President, Attorney General Bonaparte, Justice Department counsel Johnson, Sen. Dixon of Montana, and Montana agriculturists protesting the pollution. They warn gases harm vegetation and water supplies. farmers seek fus consumer controls, which firms say would be costly.
A conference in St Louis on December 3 begins the formation of a new political party by democratically radical and anti plutocratic forces. Jay W Forest chairs the national provisional committee with figures such as George Donnan N Y William Looser Pa Charles Harriman Me George H Phelps Ohio H H Stannard Okla and A J Jones Cal named as prominent attendees. The session continues for three days.
In Pine Bluff Arkansas on December 3 the government dike at Alabama street could not withstand river pressure from dynamiting operations. It washed away for 200 yards and the steep bank crumbles into the swollen river. An entire block of business houses is abandoned as banks cave and nearby structures threaten collapse. Dynamiters continued work to divert the current.
Rioters looted Port au Prince after Nord Alexis fled aboard the Duguay Trouin. General Perdovin’s force restored order as 12 people were killed and streets patrolled by armed citizens and loyal troops. French, American, and German ministers warned of landings if trouble returned. Lord Alexis, aboard the frigate, praised M. Carteron for saving his life.
