Savable captures Futurity at Sheepshead Bay in photo finish
Savable bred by J. B. Haggin and owned by John A. Drake won the Futurity at Sheepshead Bay with Lord of the Vale second and Dazzling third. Time 1:14. Crowd of about 50,000 witnessed a dramatic finish as Savable closed from behind to beat Lord of the Vale by a length. Belmont observers said Lord of the Vale would have won with more time. Total purse 53,400 with 45,400 to winner. Drake reportedly earned the era’s largest turf wager, over 100,000.

Special Dispatch to the Standard from Livingston Montana Aug 30 A ranch home 27 miles northeast of Livingston saw the death of Fred Bishir 40 a Winterset Iowa native killed by his hired man David Brockus after a quarrel over a boy's kitchen duties Brockus claimed self defense but authorities dispute the justification Coroner Leard impaneled a jury and Brockus is jailed pending further investigation.

James McHugh, a long time county poorhouse inmate, was found unconscious with a bullet through his brain in the rear of a shooting gallery tent in Dillon. A shooter missed the target and struck McHugh as he slept off drink. He was 55 and had lost both hands to frost. last seen at 7 AM after receiving whiskey.
