Magnetite Beds in Blackfeet Region Fuel Prospect Hopes

1912 geologic survey by Eugene Stebinger in the Blackfeet Indian Reservation of Northwestern Montana uncovers scattered magnetite beds in a sandstone formation across the west half of the reservation. Beds average 27.3 percent iron and 8.3 percent titanium oxide, with some samples up to 33.2 percent iron and 10.6 percent titanium oxide. While not prospected due to reservation restrictions, analysts see potential tonnage for ore averaging 30 to 40 percent iron, though high titanium content complicates smelting today.
