End of Litigation on Northern Pacific Land in South Butte
Patent issued by the General Land Office for a portion of township 3 range 7 east half southeast quarter northwest quarter section 1 ends a long ownership dispute. The land, once part of the Northern Pacific Railway grant and later sold to Joseph McParland, was contested as mineral not agricultural land. The decision notes the land is more valuable for agriculture, a mineral finding being insufficient alone to establish mining rights. A patent was issued to the railroad, then quit-claimed to McParland, concluding years of costly litigation.
