The Anaconda Copper Mining Company reached a cash deal to acquire most Montana interests of the late Senator W A Clark. The sale includes Clark holdings in Clark estate properties Butte mining and smelting concerns and related entities with transfers to Metals Bank Trust Company for banking duties.
Mrs Elsie Rimell of Los Angeles declares she will not surrender hope Raleigh Rimell, a member of Colonel Fawcett’s ill fated party, is alive until proven dead. She plans to travel to New York to meet Commander Dyott returning from South America and has shared identifying marks with relief leaders. Her last contact was a May 1925 letter containing pictures.
Albany August 21 Associated Press reports a GE set up to televise Governor Smith during his acceptance speech. The test aims to show his facial expressions and gestures as the Democratic nominee speaks. If ready the broadcast will reach about 100 radio stations via WGY and shortwave 2XAF 2XAD.
Reports from Belgrade and frontier posts claim Ahmed Zogu will be proclaimed king within days with Scanderbeg III as his official regnal name. The change may be formally announced next Saturday and a national feast observed Sunday.
In Livingston Montana Arthur Snyder 23 died and five others were seriously injured when a government truck slipped from a high grade rolled five times and fell 80 feet. The injured include Kermit Higgins driver A Clayton E Passmore Howard Cline and E J Weaver. They were taken to Yellowstone park hospital at Mammoth.
Herbert Hoover toured West Branch Iowa lingering with old friends and greeting new supporters. He toured his birthplace cottage and the nearby cemetery where his parents are buried, reflecting on his Quaker boyhood as campaign chatter rose around him.
The Johanagan mountain fire expands beyond 500 acres of timber amid high winds to reach 8,400 acres as 227 firefighters battle both Johanagan and Doris Creek blazes in remote timberlands near Lewis and Clark route. Democratic leaders plan Senator Robinson of Arkansas to launch the vice presidential campaign in the South starting around September 6. After Hot Springs notification on August 30 he will tour Texas Tennessee Northern Florida the Atlantic coast to Virginia then Western Tennessee and Kentucky with 10 to 14 speeches expected.
President Coolidge accepted Hoover’s resignation as secretary of commerce and named William F Whiting of Holyoke Massachusetts to head the department. The appointment follows a note of appreciation for Hoover’s service and best wishes in the broader field he will pursue.
More than 500 safety experts miners and engineers from across the United States visited Anaconda Copper Mining yesterday. Led by John L. Boardman the group toured the reduction works enjoyed dinner at the Montana hotel and danced at Washoe pavilion before departing.
William Allen White denied personally attacking Governor Smith while criticizing his legislative record. He said his statements affirmed Smith’s honesty and accused the governor of substituting emotion for logic, arguing the Smith record mirrors Tammany.
Fifteen of forty six top American first aid crews tied in yesterday's world championship at Columbia Gardens and then solved an extra problem to declare a winner tonight. Robert E. Tally announces the sale of all Clark Montana interests except Missoula Public Utilities to Anaconda Copper Mining. The sale includes Elm Orlu Mining, Timber Butte Milling, Elm Orlu mine, Montana Hardware, Butte Electric Railway, Miner Publishing, Western Lumber, Moulton Mining, and W. A. Clark Brother Bank, plus all Clark Montana properties. Trustees holding 80 percent of stock led the liquidation at their behest with heirs agreeing this spring. Continued on Page 4.
