Linemen's Strike in Butte Threatens City Lighting
The electrical workers union in Butte faces a walkout, pressuring city lighting and water services. Mayor Duncan and Police Chief Murphy coordinate with Montana Power to keep lights on, while 12 extra policemen are deployed for duty during the dispute. The union demands raise about 10-20 percent plus safety bonuses, citing dangerous conditions and prior pay since 1907. Arbitration offers surface, with a proposed three-member panel to decide a settlement if all companies consent.
