A police court session sees many young, healthy men arraigned for vagrancy and drunkenness. The article notes repeat offenders, the influence of alcohol, and the social failures leading to court appearances. It recalls a miner’s after shift drink and a tray carrier sentenced to 30 days with street curfew.
Two young women charged with joy riding faced police court. Both pled guilty and were sentenced to 29 days. One write to the Standard denying vagabond claims, asserting they attended a dance and a late ride, asking fair treatment and noting robbers remain at large. The letter is signed MISS MARY PELLY.
New York company presents the comedy Ready Money at the Broadway Theatre on Wednesday Aug 20 led by Stephen Baird as he helps Grace Tyler overcome parental obstacles. The cast includes Robert Ober Frank Mills Nena Blake Clarence Rockefeller Mary Carlisle John C Brownell and Adelaid Hastings among others. The show has eight months in London eight in New York four in Chicago and three in Boston in its tour.
In Portland Oregon a riot call summoned police to the Portland Lumber mills where about 50 men said to be from Longshoremen's Union No 6 attacked S Wall a member of the Independent Longshoremen's Union of Portland. Wall was badly beaten and hospitalized. A. F. Schaab business agent of the new union pressed warrants against members of the old union for gravely assault in the business district.
