Montana Elks return from Salt Lake to a boisterous welcome in Butte. The Boston and Montana band protests final contest rules after a disputed winners’ decision on the Tannhauser overture, claiming preliminaries were qualifying heats and Denver ranked ahead.
Exalted Ruler John N. Kirk of Tutte lodge reports the Montana delegation enjoyed a splendid trip. They won first prize in the parade and Montana impressed observers with precision and soldierly bearing, though the band contest result disappointed. Helena lodge drew praise as the finest display, and Salt Lake hosted ample entertainment and hospitality.
JW McKnight of Montana gathers a large badge collection seen at the Salt Lake convention. The San Francisco emblem is highly valued with bids up to 420 offered by collectors. A Maverick Hose Company meeting adopts a badge for the state firemen’s ball as news from Billings and Sheridan, Wyo, recounts. Charles Preller’s death by a self inflicted act near Idaho Falls is noted. A sale of horses and an upcoming auction in Sheridan are also mentioned.
Great Falls reports J J Hill did not pledge railroads but moved toward locating a steel mill here. He secured a half interest in Conrad Iron Mines near Chateau County and eyed manganese deposits west of Corbin for ore supply. If plans advance, a Great Falls steel mill could employ many workers and boost local industry within years.
