Washington reports say the United States will not interfere with British plans in Southern China and will ignore a Chinese memorial urging U.S. action. Officials note Japan adapts to U S policy while Russia backs its own Pekin to Tientsin escort plan. Casualties and heat drive hard fighting near Yangtsun with sunstroke losses.
Washington Aug 11 a cablegram from Admiral Remey reports a message dated Aug 7 from Taku and dispatched through the Bureau of Navigation in Washington.
Secretary of State releases Conger dispatch from Canton dated August 11 stating the legations in Tsinan are besieged by imperial forces. He reports 60 killed and about 100 wounded with ongoing sickness but good general health. Conger vows to hold on indefinitely amid desperate conditions and notes ministers will endure to the bitter end despite unknown delivery routes from Pekin. Battery in San Francisco also mentioned.
The Seventh Artillery detachment of 147 men under Captain J. R. Williams arrived here today from Fort Riley Kansas en route to China and went into camp at the Presidio. The battery is equipped with four seven inch siege guns.
The Gaelic brought several refugees from China including Rev. C. E. Pruitt and Rev. George Worth with their wives and three children each. Pruitt warned by Consul Fowler at Chefoo about Boxer danger. Worth fled from Yantsze mission. W. B. Field fled Pekin. J. M. Dickinson headed home from Tientsin after attacks on his residence and business.
A Roosevelt Republican club organized in Helena with 1 charter member, Co. C. Newmhan elected temporary chairman and James Deering secretary. A permanent body will be formed next day. Colonel Sanders spoke, Senator Carter sent sign-in for the roll, and Roosevelt pledged three Montana speeches in autumn at Yellowstone town, Helena, and Butte.
Rome Aug 11 King Victor Emmanuel III took the constitutional oath before a mourning filled senate chamber. Crowds cheered as the cortege left the Quirinal and the king delivered a moving address praising unity, liberty, and the nation’s future. The burial of Humbert I's remains is set for Sunday at the Pantheon. Tribuna cites seizures revealing anarchist plots and implicating Bresei and Quintavelli.
London dispatches report slow allied advances on Pekin with details of Yangtsun capture. Rumors from Shanghai claim Prince Tuan and followers may flee if allies approach, while Lord Londonderry urges punishment of high mandarins once Pekin is reached.

A St Petersburg dispatch says Russia plans to troop Manchuria and retain it after the present demarcation. The war office expects 142000 men and 242 guns in Siberia by September. Shanghai awaits news from Chefoo and Tientsin as a dispatch boat from Taku is due.
A fragment notes 38 000 rounds with 114 guns and an August 30 total of 78 000 rounds with 280 guns. No place or person named.
A Tientsin dispatch dated August 7 reports German Austrian and Italian forces retreating to Tientsin after capturing Pietsang.
Helena subject matter reports that state stock inspector U J Payne and Floweree ranch hand Hill Harris suspected each other of horse theft. Each set a trap to move four Floweree horses to Idaho for sale. A bystander alerted Floweree, leading to arrests and later discharge in a justice court after the truth emerged.
Special Dispatch from the Standard reports a lightning strike incident in Paris on August 11 during an electrical storm. Details are limited but authorities investigate the event and any injuries or damage are to be released later.
A thunderstorm struck Alderman Elliott's Seventh avenue north property on Thirteenth street, setting the barn ablaze. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, causing about 150 dollars in damage. A separate alarm at the National Laundry reported a fire from a smoke stack, put out without firefighting aid.

He may speak in New York Maryland Ohio Illinois Indiana Minnesota and other northern states with a focus on large cities. The Populists will notify Bryan of their nomination later at St Paul or Minneapolis while no VP candidate is named.
Acting Interior Secretary Ryan today revised Land Commissioner Hermann’s decision in the Northern Pacific lands case. He held the company is not entitled to the 15 sections in the Missoula district that were listed in lieu of Mount Rainier forest reserve lands.
