Council Imposes Soft Drink Parlor Tax In Butte
The Butte city council passed a tax ordinance imposing a 25 dollar monthly levy on soft drink parlors with an estimated annual yield of 25 thousand dollars. Mayor Stodden said the revenue would fund a salary increase for 125 city employees. Treasurer Strasburger warned the measure could hardship merchants already burdened by multiple taxes and questioned collectability. He noted 9 thousand dollars already in the books could not be collected under the new rule. The mayor defended the ordinance as a tax on former hard drink parlors now selling soft drinks. A related incident reported a Wyoming Street resident arrested for bootlegging, bond posted, awaiting Monday court.
