Philip Kiernan a smelter laborer drowned in the sluice pond behind Cox's boarding house in Carroll. A coroner's jury ruled accidental death though testimony suggested possible premeditation. Eyewitness Philip Quinn described the fall into the flume and the failed rescue efforts as the river carried Kiernan away.
