Stockyards Plant In Operation Soon Assured For Butte

The Butte chamber of commerce announced a complete modern stockyards will open to meet current stock industry needs and future growth. L Wills of the chamber said Charles J Kelly of Metals Bank and Trust leads a group of prominent local businessmen forming an organization to manage stockyard operations and promote Butte as a livestock market hub.

City Employes Granted Raise 610 Per Month

One hundred twenty five city workers including police and fire members received a 15 dollar monthly wage increase at last night’s city council meeting. The move adds about 25000 yearly to city expenses while a luxury tax proposal to raise 100000 yearly was defeated 13 to 1. Mayor Stodden warned a veto would follow if debt reduction not pursued.

First woman begins duties as assistant attorney general

Miss Annette Adams of San Francisco was inducted into the office of assistant attorney general of the United States at the Department of Justice. She is the first woman to hold the position and started her duties today in Washington on August 4.

Fire Ravages Carp Village in Ontario

A large fire swept through the village of Carp in Carleton county 29 miles west of Ottawa threatening to destroy the village of 300 residents. Local crews battled the blaze as firefighters fought flames through the night. No injuries were reported.

Fires Rage Across Kootenai Forest Amid Wider Wildfire Spreads

A dispatch from Missoula reports the largest U S forest service fire in District 1 burning in the Kootenai forest along the Canadian line threatening a spruce timber stand. Fifty firefighters are on scene with 25 more deployed. Across the region fires also challenge Kaniksu Pend d Oreille Flathead and other forests amid dry conditions and strong winds.

Butte Fire Department May Quit If Warrants Unpaid

The Butte fire department May quit within a week if salary warrants are not cashed. Chief Martin reports many men have begun seeking other jobs as most cannot cash warrants, with about half of the 60 officers and men having served over a decade. If funds cannot be advanced, four city stations may close.

Fire damages lumber yard near Pablo Missoula

A lumber yard owned by Edward Donlan and Ben Henderson near Pablo suffered a major fire that destroyed about 4.5 million feet of timber. Firefighters used dynamite to create trenches, and the blaze, starting at 12 45 pm, required hours to control with about half the loss insured.

Prince, home in Detroit, travels in tattered clothes with a broken leg and kidney illness, now in a Moscow refugee train group awaiting Soviet permission to depart. He will endure two weeks in quarantine before contacting the American consul in licking.
