General Gobin directs harsh measures after three night attacks on troops encamped at Shenandoah. Soldiers report use of rocks and stones in the assaults and the command to shoot to kill and investigate later is issued.
The eighth regiment faced three ambush attacks on the Mahoney City road near Shenandoah Pennsylvania. Brigadier General Gobin ordered strict measures including ball cartridges for sentries and increased guard strength. Lithuani an William Stopenitz arrested. others pursued.
President Mitchell reported no change in the coal strike situation during a Scranton visit. He noted Oxford mine in Lackawanna region operated by new men with old workers pledging not to return. Some reports say Woodward colliery may resume tomorrow with old firemen returning, while others urge strikers to stay away. Public and Workmen’s alliances form to press operators for arbitration and possible state intervention.
At Shamokin on August 2 the executive board of the United Mine Workers reports from every local union in the district that not a single member has returned to work since the strike and they have no plan to return unless ordered back by higher officers.
W A Durham was arrested in Bannock county Idaho on charges of killing E M Fritz and J L Donaldson at Pocatello creek when the Forthall Indian reservation opened in June last. County Attorney Winters says a complete chain of evidence ties Durham to the crime and motives cite robbery. Donaldson owned a farm at Wood River Utah.
President Roosevelt and his wife and four children spent a quiet Sunday at Sagamore Hill with no official visitors. They attended divine service at Christ Episcopal church and endured a severe thunderstorm in the afternoon. Special Ambassador Whitelaw Reid and Mrs Reid, back from England, will visit tomorrow.
A severe thunderstorm moved through White Sulphur Springs on August 3. Baxter Hanson was struck by lightning while driving a mowing machine and escaped injury. Arthur Keen was knocked senseless, and several nearby workers were seriously shocked.
A bold bandit robs a party of men near Helena after stopping a street car. The assailant compels one victim to search the vehicle and confiscates money and valuables from the occupants. Police investigate the incident.
A masked highwayman robbed a street car group near Helena after 10 PM, taking about 60 dollars and three watches from Travis, Rindall, and passengers. The man, wearing overalls and a slouch hat, fled toward East Helena with two revolvers in hand. No trace of the suspect was found by late hours, and a separate burglary attempt at 122 Fifth Avenue yielded no loss.
P F Swanson longtime Billings clerk arrested for intercepting and hoarding official mail. Officers find 4 dozen letters including money orders and a Washington directed missive in his trunk. Bond set at 2500 dollars. Swanson to complete house search tomorrow amid questions of motive and trust.
An earthquake hit Missoula at 6 30 pm with two second tremors felt in the city and at Bonner. No damage reported in Missoula though many homes shook. a dynamo was jarred loose at Bonner and a crow bar used to realign equipment. Clinton reports a severe shock and near collapse of old buildings.
On the Crow Reservation a confrontation led to the death of Black Perry. Jim Haywie, described as a bad man from eastern Montana, reportedly sought trouble and faced the foreman of the Hysham Ranch, resulting in Perry's fatal outcome.
Jim Haynie foreman of Hysham Cattle company is reported to have shot and killed J W Perry known as Black Perry on Beaver creek Crow reservation. Perry, recently discharged for suspected theft, rode drunk from Forsyth and confronted Haynie. Haynie, aided by Tom Smith, fired four times in self defense. Haynie surrendered to Rosebud county authorities after the incident near Sanders, with a coroner’s inquest to follow.
Miles City Montana August 32 William P F Phaegin of Omaha visits as a representative of Uncle Sam to ensure government rules on dipping sheep infected with disease are enforced. He notes Montana flocks are largely free from disease compared to other regions and praises local flock masters for their cooperation.
Havre Montana August 3 Georgiana Thompson returned from Fort Benton and appeared in district court seeking a divorce from her husband George Thompson a colored soldier serving in the Philippines He wrote to her that he had married a Filipino belle and would not return the court granted Mrs Thompson a divorce.
Ralph Gilmore, a young rider from Miles City, was hurt while riding in a bucking contest. The horse stumbled in a prairie dog hole causing Gilmore to fall and injure his knee badly. He was injured on August 3.
