Sylvia Thurston, reportedly about to become a mother, tells jurors she killed a student in self defense. The chairman of the Milwaukee board visits Butte en route to Seattle on a tour of inspection.
In Missoula Montana on July 31 Sylvia Thurston 18 describes the fatal shooting of Doris Wentworth 16 during a joyride. Thurston says she fired while being attacked and fears for her safety as the jury hears the account. Four witnesses decline to testify claiming self incrimination in the same case.
A San Francisco lawyer Milton Esberg hosts Herbert Hoover at his cottage on the Klamath river near Brown's Camp California. The Chinese cook Juan stays busy with meals for twenty men and refuses to stop to meet the presidential hopeful, saying he will vote for Hoover in November.
H E Byram chairman of the Milwaukee Road says the Northwest including Montana has good crops for several years and now faces a prosperous period. He noted the railroad’s dependence on the territory it serves as his tour from Chicago continues toward Seattle.
The Butte city council will hear a judiciary committee plan led by chairman Barry O’Leary to ban street carnivals. The committee decided last night to recommend the ordinance for passage, with details to be continued on page 4.
Registration headquarters for the annual convention of the Society of Montana Pioneers opens at the Leggat hotel with Frank D. Brown in charge. Early arrivals include Thomas F. Sheehy George W. Smith and Emanuel Jacobs. Brown notes 665 members and an average age of about 80.
Guernsey Wyoming July 31 The Burlington freight wreck left its track and burned along the North Platte river ending hope of determining exact fatalities. Fragments of three skeletons found under the immobilized box car confirmed eight men were aboard and possibly twelve, as a hobo claimed twelve companions remained in the car when the train pulled away. Further bone searches were conducted but progress halted.
Arthur Goebel, famed for his Pacific crossing to win the Dole prize, is made an honorary Rocky Ford Rotary member. He travels by car from Rocky Ford to Colorado Springs to pick up a new plane he calls the fastest in America. He will attempt a 175 mph LA to New York run financed by Harry Tucker of New York.
Today at 9 30 a m the first air mail and passenger service through Butte will be inaugurated at the Butte airport with civic executives and thousands of citizens expected. Mayor M Kerr Beadle will deliver an address and a number of dignitaries from city, county and state will assist the ceremony. The Fokker monoplane from Great Falls will arrive at 9 30 piloted by A W Stephenson with W M Jardine and other officials on hand for loading. Special buses will run to the airport to move crowds.
Helena reports the Great Falls to Salt Lake City air mail route will begin tomorrow at 8 45 am with one of two Fokker monoplanes landing at the capital’s municipal airport to pick up mail. Among 83 pounds of mail is a letter from Governor J E Erickson to Governor George H Dern of Utah.
John P. Gamon, 74, pioneer horse breeder and rancher, died at his ranch on Crazy Woman creek near Buffalo Wyoming. In six decades of ranching he owned land from his birthplace in Livingston County, Illinois, to Wyoming and became noted for raising Percheron horses on his historic Johnson County ranch.
Butte's first air mail shipment totals 9 500 letters to be sent today on four airplanes. Postmaster Richard Brimacombe announced the mail will depart after a special cancellation machine sped preparation. A letter addressed to One Long Hop in Connellsville Pa amused officials.
A $15 000 blaze in the 890 block of High Ore terrace last night destroyed three families homes. The fire began in the Pat Kelly residence at 803 High Ore terrace and spread to John J Lowney at 805 High Ore terrace. Neighbors and volunteers saved some furniture but most contents were lost.

The O'Connor Transatlantic Airways announces tests on a model sea plane designed to carry 60 passengers across the North Atlantic in 20 hours. Construction to begin immediately, first plane due in four months, with wing span of 160 feet and eight engines.
In Hampton Bays New York Governor Al Smith capped his holiday with a final round of golf and a farewell swim in Peconic Bay before driving back toward New York City and Albany. He said he would avoid political discussion at least until after his vacation and stood by his attacks on the legislative record even as charges against him were withdrawn.
