A former inmate from an asylum launches a club and axe attack killing a wife, a baby, and a three year old girl before taking his own life. The incident implicates a brutal domestic assault and mass murder that shocks the community.
In Malta Montana on a ranch 35 miles southeast of town James E Hovey and his wife and two young children were found dead after an axe and club attack. Two 9 and 11 year old boys escaped and alerted neighbors. The mother was killed with a blow to the skull and a 15 month old girl died. a teenage girl was found beaten. Hovey shot himself, severing a jugular vein, and the gun lacked a trigger or stock. A baby girl was gravely injured. The older daughter survived unconscious. The scene showed the killer acted during an insanity episode prior to his death.
The United States Senator from Minnesota died suddenly on an overnight train near Harrisburg. The body began its journey to Alexandria, Minnesota, with funeral plans likely for Friday. Governor Purtt? and secretary Simon Michelet accompanied the remains as officials prepared further arrangements. The death was attributed to heart trouble aggravated by winter illnesses.
Four passengers in a Maxwell runabout escaped with minor bruises after the car crashed through the railing of a small bridge near Rocker. The vehicle, owned by Mrs. H. Hearing, rolled over four times, women trapped briefly but rescued. all four were driven to Butte by a taxi after the wreck, which damaged a stretch of fence and left the wheels skyward.
Antone Hoegley, 63, died in a Helena hospital from spotted fever contracted by a tick bite. Two 12 year old girls who ran away from Missoula were taken from a box car in Helena and placed in the county jail for care. They will be returned home to Missoula tomorrow morning. The girls had no firm plan beyond seeing the world as they traveled eastbound and were intercepted in Helena.
The steamer Seaconet sank in Vineyard Sound near Newport early April 29 with seven men and one woman aboard. The woman and 14 men reached the Vineyard Light Ship, while the others remained unaccounted for as the vessel listed heavily to starboard on a coastwise Boston to Norfolk run.
Plans to bring Clara Phillips from Honduras to serve a 10 years to life sentence for the murder of Mrs Alberta Tremaine Meadows will be reviewed at a conference tomorrow between the sheriff and the district attorney's offices. W. Biscailuse, appointed by the state board of control, and Mrs. Biscailuse are set to make the trip. officials may seek funds from the county for two more deputies and two matrons. The plan may change if travel proves too difficult. Carson is not slated for extradition at this time, but authorities would arrest him if possible to pursue those responsible for Phillips escape. Biscailuse plans to leave for Honduras via New Orleans around May 5.
The AP reports a new unofficial Pan American committee formed to promote solidarity for peace and progress in the western hemisphere. John Bar former director general of the American union announces the group with Augustine Edwards of the Santiago conference as a key figure. Central headquarters will be in New York with branches in Mexico City Havana Panama Denver Seattle and other cities.
An AP report from Atlantic City details a steam boiler explosion at the Atlantic City Gag Company plant. The blast damaged the engine roof, shattered windows within a mile, and rattled the city, injuring one man as firemen worked inside a partially collapsed north wall.

A rock slide two miles east of Springdale buried the rail roadbed at 9 o'clock Saturday evening. More than 100 tons of rock covered the track and wrecked 60 to 80 feet of line, burying telegraph wires. Crews were sent immediately and worked through the night to repair the damage.
Dewey nephew of Admiral Dewey and five companions escaped death when their seaplane sank off Coney Island. After drifting for hours, Dewey swam nearly a mile to seek help for the stranded aviators.
