The industrial school closes, four instructors are dropped, two truant officers resign, and seven teachers including an assistant superintendent quit. Protest erupts citywide as layoff rules bar reinstatement based on seniority.
The Djambi oil field bill passed in the Dutch second chamber 49 to 30, barring Standard Oil’s concession bid in Sumatra. The ten year exploit plan pairs the Dutch government with Batavia Oil, part of the Shell group, with Dutch government control and Dutch directors. The U S urges reciprocity, insisting American capital receive equal privileges in Dutch law areas.

Italy announces full accord with the United States on the island of Yap and other former German possessions. Ambassador Ricci handed the note to Secretary Hughes citing equality of rights for mandates and urging joint action toward peaceful co operation with Britain France and Japan. Italy backs the Anglo French plan to study the issue and seeks a unified national policy to preserve peace and prosperity.
A lone bandit, just across from the Shadow Butte police station, robbed Buckley & Crowley at 39 East Broadway shortly after midnight. He forced proprietor Jack Buckley to raise his hands, taking $64 as a customer and a bystander remained in a back room. Police arrived shortly after but he fled.
Washington April 23 The effort for a national agreement between printing trades and employers over wages and hours was abandoned by Secretary Davis after separate talks with both sides. Employers lack a unified signatory body, leaving local unions and employers to set terms. Some settlements include a 44 hour week, while others may accept wage reductions as the 48 hour framework shifts locally.
Thomas J. Murphy, convicted last week in Hamilton for a statutory offense involving a 13 year old, attempted to kill himself in the Hamilton jail. He slashed his throat with a concealed razor and was unconscious when found. Doctors worked on him for two hours. his condition delayed his sentencing, postponed until he can appear in court. Murphy, over 60, faced sentencing for the enton case.
London April 20 French delegation arriving for the supreme council said France would proceed alone to the Ruhr occupation if allied support fails. They argued Germany can present new proposals after occupation as before. Premiers Briand and Lloyd George will hold talks ahead of a full Downing Street conference.
St Paul April 29 The state supreme court denied a new trial for A Townley president of the National Non Partisan League and Joseph Gilbert former league manager convicted of conspiracy to teach sedition The case was tried in June 1919
The federal trade commission issued a formal complaint against United States Steel Corp and 11 subsidiaries alleging unfair interstate commerce practices via the Pittsburg plus price system. The ruling targets rail freight included in steel pricing, claims control of iron ore, and orders responses by May 31. The action stems from widespread pressure by manufacturers, state legislatures, and business groups.
Clyde D. Webster, 16, earned a bronze Carnegie Medal for a July 2, 1930, rescue attempt at a Dillon gravel pit that left Merle Hatfield and another girl dead. Mrs. Nannie B. Crocker of Ponca City, Oklahoma, received a silver medal posthumously for risking her life to save the girl.
