Notorious Hartwell Dies After Prison Break in Montana
John J. Hartwell, famed automobile bandit and jail escape artist, was shot by a guard during a daylight escape attempt at Deer Lodge State Prison. Despite prior good behavior, he climbed a wall pole and cable, then fled before being wounded in the shoulder and back of the head. He died later at the prison hospital. Hartwell had led a gang that terrorized motorists south of Butte years ago and had a history of escapes, including from Colorado and Silver Bow county jail.
