Mike Mitrovich a Croatian, was lured to Tram Way Gulch where he was shot five times through the head and body. He had prior trouble with a person believed to be responsible for the fatal attack.
The corpse of 66 year old Croatian Mike Mitrovich was found near Tramway gulch west of the Cleveland street NP crossing. Five 32 caliber shots and two head wounds indicate a deliberate murder. Identification came via Nass Matt and friends, with two local men confirming the name. The crime scene yielded shells and bullets suggesting the gun was cleaned. Irish by Census, Mitrovich had worked as a section hand in Donald and planned to depart for Donald before his death.
The House passed the Young emergency tariff and anti dumping bill by a 269 to 112 vote with 2 present as Republican leaders faced a stormy session. Democrats Parrish Blanton Jones of Texas supported the measure along with several Louisiana members amid claims of party defection and senate dictation.
Chicago April 15 The railroad labor board announced abrogation of national agreements with railroads. The shop trades executive council called it a great victory for labor stating it does not impair workers' status. About 500000 shop crafts workers affected. Railroads approved the decision, though some features criticized. Samuel Gompers and others condemned it as influenced by big business. The board said the move may open a path to permanent industrial peace.
London April 15 A tense day ends with relief that railway and transport strikes were called off. The miners strike persists with Frank Hodges under scrutiny as a national conference is planned. Government remains firm while mine owners repeat calls for wage adjustments and offer talks.
Gen Pablo Gonzales who crossed into Mexico and was rumored to revolt against the government was in Laredo for several days. Local officials report no revolution underway in this border region.
Butte plans strong representation at next year’s Montana stockmen’s convention in Helena. A special train will carry delegations from Butte and Anaconda and from Southern and Western Montana. Many will stay to attend the Somers Ortega fight under the Helena American Legion. Jere Clifford reports robust ticket sales for the event, expected to be a top Montana gathering in years.
In Bozeman on April 15 burglars entered the residence of Rev. A. L. Chapman pastor of the Christian church during the occupants' absence and stole two written sermons one of which was to be delivered Sunday.
Washington April 15. The Colombian treaty faced fierce senate opposition as Johnson California and Len root Wisconsin attacked the pact for three hours calling it a wrong to Theodore Roosevelt and inviting blackmail by crooked nations. Democrat Watson Georgia delivered his maiden speech critiquing administration leaders and Lodge. Despite the heat, administration leaders via Curtis Kansas said enough votes exist to ratify next Wednesday, the planned vote date. Johnson argued the payout of 25 000 090 to Colombia would be fiscal folly and urged relief for farmers soldiers and the unemployed instead. Continued on Page 7 Column 7
Washington April 15 The active campaign of national and international AFL affiliated unions to unionize U S steel plants will begin June 19. The executive council said the plan proceeds despite unemployment and weak industrial conditions.
In Deer Lodge on April 15 a large crowd gathered in tribute to Frank Conley after his 36 years as head of the state penitentiary. Demonstrators from Butte Anaconda and Deer Lodge valley paraded to honor him, presenting a loving cup as speakers praised his service and a special train carried leading citizens to join the reception at the warden’s home beside the prison.
Reports from the Arkansas Gazette indicate 39 dead from a southwestern Arkansas storm with 26 white victims and many unidentified. Tornado path stretched over 25 miles from Hempstead county toward Hope, causing widespread farm destruction and about 50 000 dollars in property losses.
A Texarkana broadcast reports a northeast moving storm that leveled Shiloh and Trigenta areas. Eleven dead and many injured with extensive property loss, including a wrecked schoolhouse at Shiloah and another at Trigenta, plus destruction on plantations and tenant houses.
Denver endured a ferocious storm dumping over 10 inches of snow and isolating the city. In the San Luis valley 14 inches fell with no letup, while Alamosa fire crews battled blazes as two buildings burned. An eight foot snow blockage stranded the Denver and Salt Lake line at Corona.
New York April 15. Steel market rivals US Steel and independents announced price cuts as idle mines may resume. Pipe prices fell eight dollars a ton and sheet steel quotes dropped seven to fourteen dollars. US Steel expected further cuts to piping and tubes. Wage reductions for 160000 workers were rumored though officials denied it. Purchasers waited for railroad wage scale changes to ease freight rates. The American Sheet and Tinplate unit cut sheet quotations seven to fourteen dollars a ton.
