After a 36 year tenure as warden of the Penitentiary Frank Gonley is removed from office and must vacate within twenty four hours. The abrupt action follows a life service event and prompts immediate administrative changes within the facility. Gonley had long led the penitentiary through decades of reforms and challenges.
Helena April 13 Milton W Potter prominent Carbon county figure and former sheriff was appointed by Governor Dixon as state prison warden to replace Frank Conley who has run Montana's prison for 32 years The move surprised many lawmakers and party leaders while Potter is hailed as a courageous peace officer and Conley’s successor resumes duties immediately Potters resignation date set for April 15 with Charles A Jakways named to succeed Potter as state game warden at Ovando Powell county
In a San Francisco divorce, E B La Haye must pay Mrs Helen La Haye $1000 and is allowed periodic visits to the family cat given to the wife. The cat, nine years old, must remain in California and the decree grants the artist access while addressing alimony.
A large blaze gutted the Ambassador Hotel in Santa Barbara eliminating a 350 room property. All guests and staff reportedly escaped unharmed after a maid fell onto a fire escape. Early loss estimates reached 1.5 million dollars with insurance on the building and contents totaling 492,000. Fire crews saved detached buildings and utilities as wind pushed embers seaward.
At headquarters Finlen Hotel in Great Falls the Montana State Association of Electrical Dealers and Contractors holds a two day convention. More than 200 dealers from across the state are expected to attend along with representatives of large eastern manufacturers. Butte hosts plan entertainment as guests began arriving for the August 1920 gathering.
A tornado swept through Melissa six miles north of Mckinney Texas today, killing five people and injuring from 25 to more as fire raged in the debris. The entire business district and east side were razed, while the storm damaged the school building where about 246 children were classed, though none were hurt.
Congress moves to expedite the emergency tariff bill as committees in both houses plan immediate work on a broad economy program. Senator Knox introduces a resolution to end the war state with Germany and Austria, with debates next week and a five minute rule for Friday.
Spokane April 13 James F Callahan millionaire Wa lace Idaho mine owner testified at the Jay C Hough forgery trial. Callahan described buying Teel irrigation project bonds linked to alleged forgeries. J Frank Spinning Echo Oregon secretary testified the 100 Teel bonds were forged and sold to Callahan. Hough says forged bonds were done under threats from partner Milholland who later committed suicide after Hough surrendered.
General Charles 8. Warren, a famed Butte figure, veteran of war and mining, died yesterday after a long illness of malignant throat cancer. The long respected public official and trail blazer fought for more than 30 hours despite doctors and relatives losing hope. He spoke of walking on the edge of the grave, remaining steadfast until the end.
In Washington on April 18 the president and attorney general said no general amnesty for prisoners convicted under wartime espionage laws will be contemplated until peace is declared. They assured delegations urging release of Eugene V. Debs and others held under such convictions that cases will be considered individually.
In Chicago on April 13 two men and a woman volunteered to be inoculated with scarlet fever germs in an experiment led by Dr. Wig Hektoen and Dr. Dick of McCormick Institute to isolate a killer serum. Volunteers who contract the disease will receive $1,000 while those not infected earn $70.
London reports Premier Lloyd George pressed for grounds of miners and railway workers refusal to accept wage reductions. The triple alliance deliberated into the night and sent a reply to the premier. A miners' manifesto argues pooling profits is essential, while the government offers national wage regulation funds. The dispute deepens as public sympathy shifts.
Special Dispatch from Washington indicates Senator Walsh reintroduced many bills from the prior congress. Key items include a federal judge for Montana, a dam on the Yellowstone River, reimbursing Lewis and Clark county for Helena forest road work, state war risk appeals boards, a Custer battlefield building, and Broadwater irrigation district dam on the Missouri River. Additional measures cover enlarging public buildings in Billings Helena and Gallatin forest consolidation, plus land grants for Custer county fairgrounds and Indian relief.
