Vera Cruz April 12 Gen Gus tavo Maas federal commander at Vera Cruz said the U S offered Gen Morelos Saragoza to accede to Admiral Mcyu's demand that the American flag be saluted within two hours. A train bandit believed to be Harry Mathews was shot and killed by officers during an attempted arrest on a Chicago Milwaukee St Paul freight near Bowman North Dakota. Conductor Edward Strieba l pursued the suspect, who drew a revolver. One companion, identified as Toy Smith, claimed Philadelphia as home. Passenger casualties reported in separate Seattle Brinnon incident include three killed when two bandits halted a Great Northern passenger train near Brinnon Washington on February 20. Suspects Marty Mathews and George Gull fled after robbing passengers. William Halt, arrested in Calgary, is held in Mount Vernon for murder in the first degree.
On April 13 near Riverton Station eight miles from Seattle a Tacoma bound Interurban train was held up by two highwaymen who were beaten by passengers after a shot was fired. The would be robbers were captured and brought to Seattle for custody.
Special Dispatch to the Standard reports I A Monroe a former railroad man died in his room at the Adrian Hotel Salt Lake City this afternoon by his own hand. He left letters to Portes NSAL and Kotter Salt Lake local No 22 of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers outlining personal crisis and instructions for his affairs. Monroe had lived in Anaconda for years and maintained his engineer membership.
Two brothers killed each other in a fatal duel after years apart. Witnesses describe Victor firing at John after an exchange about temperance, then John firing upward as he exposed himself, followed by Minter striking the younger brother through the heart. The tragedy occurred as they were aged in their forties.
Warden Clancy reports confession by Frank Becker, amid trial for Rosenthal murder. Becker claims participation in plot but denial of firing the shots. Testimony includes details of prior planning, fear, and motive as authorities and relatives seek truth before second Becker trial.
