She died at Columbia hospital around midnight and an inquest was planned. Land said she mistook carbolic acid for mouth gargle while suffering sore throat and intended to take Listerine. She had been in ill health and had no previous indication of suicide.

It took 10 hours to remove the liquor using patrol wagons and motor trucks to the West Thirtieth street station as officers rode with revolvers after a rumor of a recovery attempt.
United States bituminous coal production plunged to about 3.5 million tons in early April 1919, the lowest in modern history, as strike disruptions closed large portions of fields and demand waned. Anthracite output also fell with many mines idle or operating minimally during the week cited.
