Odd County Surveyor Used Tied Ankles to Measure Land
The Kingman Leader-Courier recounts a Kingman County Kansas surveyor who lacked instruments and did not rely on them. He walked with a cord tied between his ankles, stepping a fixed fifth of a rod each time, counting steps to cover distances. Morning dew made the rawhide cord stretch, lengthening morning strides and altering quarter section bounds compared to afternoon work. The effect lingered, causing lingering annoyance to this day. Poultry wanted. B. Read.
