Friends, faculty and students gathered for a two hour tribute at the campus chapel to honor Dr W M Beardshear. Speakers praised his leadership, friendship and lifelong service to education, while music and poetry framed the solemn farewell.
A tribute to Dr. Beardshear highlights his role in advancing industrial education at Iowa and Ames. The speech praises his leadership, vision for a unified college, and ability to mobilize state support, noting enrollment growth and enduring Beardshear halls as memorials.
The piece portrays Dr. Beardshear as a poet by nature not by formal verse. It extols his transcendence and moral authority, noting his sermons as psalms and his talks as chapters from proverbs. It argues he belonged to the second class of poets who interpret rather than analyze.
