The Fair E invites Ames residents to visit the new store to inspect a wide range of dry goods and homewares. It pledges affordable prices for all purses and promises to offer only the best goods across a broad line from clothing to lamps and stationery.
An old advertisement lists best overalls at 50 cents, good jumpers, large red handkerchiefs at 1.25, pants at 60 cents, overshirts, boys knee pants 25 cents, boys knee suits and flannel waists, and men's hats.
Local ad touts a full footwear selection with prices suited to hard times. Ladies, gents, misses, and children’s shoes offered including Kid Shoes, Never Rip models, and boots with prices ranging roughly from $1.00 to $2.50.
A brief product list shows pins hairpins buttons sewing silk spools and embroidery silk offered by a shop. Items include safety pins per paper fashion supplies hooks and eyes belt pins hair curlers pencils and large tablets with prices noted in small cents. A large line of stationery is also advertised as always in stock.
Iowa residents note subdued Labor Day observances while Bayomie sprinter Johnny Crum earns honors in New Jersey. Clay County News changes hands with M Ws Richards selling to Gillespie and Randall. Gillespie, a News founder, returns to the paper’s roots and the Times editor earns the nickname "devil" in the News office.
The Sovereign note boycott began Monday with unclear impact as no notes have been encountered yet. An Indiana Greensburg exchange notes a farmer grew a seventeen pound tomato this year and jokes about heavier bars being produced there.
The Times still accepts bank notes for subscriptions advertising and job work, and urges readers not to be backward about tendering them. The note value remains intact at this office despite the boycott.
Last Saturday the first jury was drawn under the new law. Voters names were drawn from the county list and placed in a separate box to be used only after the full list of voters has been exhausted.
An editor notes, in a wry reply, that he has never seen a baldheader woman or any woman do rough masculine feats such as waltzing in shirtsleeves with a cigar, fishing with a bottle, sitting all day in damp ground, going home drunk, or swearing she could beat any man, blessing she is not built that way.
The report cites Col. Mackey denouncing Goldbug resolutions at a Marshalltown convention. He warns of an inescapable storm and asserts his loyalty to the people even if the Democratic Party sinks to hell. He claims thirty years aiding the party and vows to stay true to the people.
