Weather Crop Bulletin Des Moines September 1 1896
The past week was cool and dry with ample sunshine. Daily mean temperatures ran two to four degrees below normal and light frosts occurred on the 26th and 27th with no damage reported. Corn is ripening slowly and about 60 percent of acreage will need two to three weeks of good weather to mature. Threshing nears completion, plowing advances, and fall seeding is ready in parts. A heavy second hay crop is ready, pastures are fine, and fall feed will be abundant. Flax yields are generally good but potato prospects are variable and not favorable for average yields.
