A description of Taft and Sherman sweeping the election across New York Ohio and Indiana with strong northern support and near unanimous returns. The piece notes fair weather big turnout and a campus parade by college students from the south and west side clubs with no property damage and mixed public reaction.
Tom Fultz of this city sues Empire State Surety Company of Chicago and Henry Schleuter’s bondsmen for 50000 in personal damages after a brick dropped from three stories struck him on October 12 1907 at the new agricultural building in Des Moines Iowa. The case is set for November term of the federal court in Des Moines.
I J Scott hosts a banquet in Ames to honor H A McCune who leaves Ames to join the coast artillery. About forty company members and wives attend at the Ames hotel with a supper at eight and several speeches by Col. Lincoln Captain Knapp I J Scott and H E Hadley.
The speech notes Taft leading in Nebraska New York Pennsylvania and others with Ohio Indiana by large margins. It states Iowa gave Taft sixty thousand, while Governor Cummins decisively defeated Major Lacey for the nomination. Seventy five college men dressed in nightshirts marched through the city streets last Saturday evening causing surprise among residents. The unusual display drew onlookers as the pedestrians followed the unexpected nighttime procession through central avenues.
Downtown students gathered after seven Saturday evening and built a large bonfire in the street between the post office and Tilden's store. The blaze burned for about thirty minutes with high flames and loud cheers before dying down. A second embers pile on Douglass Avenue marked another Cyclone victory.
W J Semmons of this city continues to win prizes on Ladies Home Journal ads appearing in the Times. An August 1 check for 10, a September 1 check for 10, and a style book ad for 5 bring his total to 75 dollars won from ads printed in this office.
M. J. Adams & Company, furniture dealers, purchased a new ambulance this week to add to their undertaking equipment. The vehicle arrived yesterday.
Last Saturday night passed with little disruption as Halloween was observed in a calm manner. Only minor vandalism such as tore up sidewalks appeared, leaving routine activities largely unchanged.
Mrs. Sarah J. Law files for an AVSNCE divorce from David Law in Nevada Iowa. She seeks custody of daughter Mabel fourteen and $500 temporary alimony. Trial set for November 9 before Judge Albrook. Petitioner cites cruel and inhuman treatment as the motive.
Monday evening Lem Deal and companions ran with hounds and trapped two possums. The woods this year are full of these animals and the boys already hold several in captivity.
John Sims seeks ten thousand dollars in damages over his wife’s death in a personal injury suit against Drs. Ghrist and Ghrist. The case progresses at the current district court term.
Miss Ethel Underwood has completed her stenography course at a business college in Omaha after several months of study and returned home last Saturday evening. She has accepted a position in Prof. Meeker's office at the college.
Miss Jessie Wood, longtime stenographer for Prof Meeker, takes the vacant post in Prof Marston’s office left by Miss Cora Gallo Way’s resignation.
Mrs. W. H. Meeker sues for divorce and alimony through attorneys McCarthy and Luke against her husband Prof. W. H. Meeker.
